What is Neuro-Ophthalmology?

Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of neurology and ophthalmology that focuses on the treatment of visual problems related to the optic nerve, brain and central nervous system. In neuro-ophthalmology conditions, eye symptoms are not caused by the eye itself. Rather, they occur as a result of other brain or systemic conditions.

Neuro-Ophthalmology Disorders

Neurological vision problems stem from conditions that cause inflammation or compression, or that reduce blood supply to the eyes. There are a number of neuro-ophthalmology disorders that may cause vision disturbances, including:

  • Bell’s Palsy
  • Giant Cell Arteritis
  • Ischemic Optic Neuropathy
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Myasthenia Gravis
  • Optic Neuritis
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Optic Neuropathy
  • Thyroid Eye Disease
  • Tumor

Common Neuro-Ophthalmology Symptoms

Although the symptoms depend on the type of neuro-ophthalmology disorder, patients with the following symptoms may be referred to a neuro-ophthalmologist for evaluation:

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Blind spots
  • Vision loss or color vision loss (can be slow or rapid)
  • Headaches
  • Abnormal eye movement
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Eyelid abnormalities
  • Facial spasms
  • Unequal pupil size
