Ophthalmologist or Optometrist?

Unlike an optometrist, an ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) who has received specialized training in the anatomy, functioning and disorders of the eye. This type of eye doctor completed four years of medical school and a one-year internship prior to undertaking a three-year minimum residency in ophthalmology. In their training, these doctors get hands-on experience in every element of eye and vision care: prevention, treatment and management. In addition, an ophthalmologist may also spend a few years being trained in a specialty area such as cornea, retina or plastic surgery.

The major difference between ophthalmologists and other eye specialists like optometrists or opticians is the level of complexity in what they can diagnose and treat. Because ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in vision and eye care, they are more capable of handling serious diseases, dysfunction or injuries of the eye.
