What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens in the eye, the structure that helps to bend light to see images clearly. Over time, the clouding becomes progressively worse, making normal vision more difficult.

Causes of Cataracts

Aging is a primary cause of cataract development, but the following factors may also increase your risk:

  • Genetics
  • Long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays
  • Smoking
  • Use of corticosteroid medications
  • Eye injury

Symptoms of Cataracts

Individuals with cataracts may experience a slow progression of blurred vision, double vision, dull colors, light sensitivity and increased glare that impairs nighttime vision. If you experience these symptoms, schedule a comprehensive eye exam with an ophthalmologist to determine if you are developing cataracts.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Cataract

Several tests help an ophthalmologist diagnose the presence of cataracts and the extent of their development. Shreveport Eye Clinic uses lasers or a modern procedure known as “phacoemulsification”, which employs ultrasound technology to break up the clouded eye lens. These procedures make very small incisions, take only a short amount of time, and heal quickly after the artificial lens is implanted.
