Blurry vision can be temporary and caused by a minor issue, or it can indicate a more serious health problem. If you have persistent blurry vision with or without additional symptoms, we encourage you to contact an ophthalmologist for a consultation.

Common Causes of Blurry Vision

Most cases of blurry vision are not caused by a medical emergency. However, if your blurry vision lasts longer than one or two days, it’s still important to seek professional help from an eye doctor. Untreated causes of blurry vision may lead to progressive vision loss and other issues. Some of the most common causes of blurry vision include:

  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Eye allergies (pet dander, dust, mold, pollen, smoke, makeup, airborne chemicals, contact lens solution, etc.)
  • Pregnancy
  • Refractive errors, which affect the way light enters the eye and focuses on the retinas (common refractive errors include nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism)
  • Keratoconus (a progressively abnormal shape of the cornea)
  • Wearing contact lenses for too long
  • Photokeratitis (sun-blindness or snow-blindness)
  • LASIK eye surgery (at least in the initial recovery period)
  • Underlying ocular diseases, such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration

The most important step in resolving blurry vision is getting a proper diagnosis. The cause of blurry vision can be determined through a variety of tests and measures, including external/internal eye inspection, vision testing, lab work and personal/family history assessment. Once a diagnosis has been made, an appropriate treatment plan will be established. This may include in-clinic services, such as corrective prescription eyewear, medications or even surgical procedures.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Care for Blurry Vision

In rare cases, blurry vision can indicate a serious underlying health problem that requires urgent medical attention. If your blurry vision is sudden and persistent, or if it is accompanied by other sudden symptoms like headaches and eye pain, call 911 and seek emergency care. Acute blurry vision may occur due to potentially serious health problems, such as strokes and retinal detachment.
